What is the difference between a template website and a custom website? Many of the websites on the internet were created using a template product. A design purchased, that allows the user to upload images and text to easily create a website. The user views samples of the template and in many cases, expects the ability to customize the look and layout. Although a user can experience major disappointment at what is not do-able on the front, visual side of the site the real detriment is what's going on, or “not changeable” on the back side of the site. The code is where the search engines crawl for unique content, global standard code & raw text that can easily be translated to other languages. A template website has a shelf life and many of the sites being offered for certain industries use, have gone well past their expiration date but are still selling them as new. (real estate is a good case in point). While the business profile of mass producing and selling a million, may work well for fast food it spells disaster for the business of web design & development, at least for the unknowing consumer. The code used for creating websites changes critically sometimes every few months and each update of the browsers (Internet Explorer 7.0, 8.0; Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc.) can effect the way a site is seen based on how the code is interpreted by that browser. The difference between a template website and a custom one, is how many times you expect to start over... The purpose I use in maintaining my web design business is to create long-term, trusting relationships with my customers so that every website created is a foundation built for the ultimate success of that customer's business. |
